The Summer Reading Programs at both the Plano Public Library System and Wylie’s Smith Public Library continue this month with programs, events and activities.
All activities are free.
Smith Public Library
To participate in the Children’s Summer Reading Club, for kids from birth to fifth grade, young readers keep a log of the books they read or are read to them. They can get a prize for every 10 books read. Prizes range from a reading certificate to food coupons.
Upcoming programs include;
6 p.m. Thursday, July 7 – Melody Bell, Storyteller
2 p.m. Friday, July 8 – Sing-a-long Matinee “Alice in Wonderland”
12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. – July 12 – James Wand Secret Agent Magic Show
6 p.m. July 14 – George the Magician
12:30 and 1:30 p.m. July 19 – Margaret Clauder, storyteller
6 p.m. July 21 – Mark Shelton, percussionist
2 p.m. July 22 – Sing-a-long Matinee: “Mary Poppins”
12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. July 26 – Willy Welch
“Going Global and Staying Connected” is the theme of the Teen Summer Reading Club, for readers entering sixth through 12th
grades.
Students pick up an entry from and complete three reading activities such as reading a book, magazine or graphic nove, coming to a teen program at the library or listening to a book.
Prizes include paperback books, food coupons and a chance to win one gift cards: $100 from Target and Best Buy, $25 to AMC and gift certificates for Chilos, Chick-fil-A, and Mooyah Burger.
Teen programs planned are:
3 to 5 p.m. July 7 – Diwali lamps and Rangoli – Crafts from India. All supplies will be provided.
3 to 5 p.m. July 14 – Lucha Libra Masks – design a unique wrestling mask.
3 to 5 p.m. July 21 – Hula dancing with Maria McElroy. Learn the authentic Hawaiian dance.
3 to 5 p.m. July 28 – End of summer party with food, games, karaoke and prizes.
The Literacy Leapers, a special needs reading club for early childhood to elementary-age participants and their family members, meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday through July 28.

July 7 – Balloon Art and Story Telling
July 14 – The Three Little Pigs Puppet Theatre
July 21 – Six Early Literacy Skills with author Laurel Iakovakis
July 28 – Face Painting & Prizes
Adults
The Adult Summer Reading Club is for those ages 18 and up. All completed logs must be turned in by July 30.
Five names will be selected by random drawing to receive a gift bag filled with goodies and a gift card, Orozco said.
As part of the Adult Summer Reading Club, the Read to Reel Film Series and the 4th Monday Book Club continue. These programs are intended for adults ages 18 and up.
Read to Reel Film Series – 5:30 p.m. July 14 – “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” Get ready for Part 2 by reviewing
Part 1. Dinner provided or you can bring your own.
The 4th Monday Book Club meets at 6:30 p.m. the fourth Monday of every month in the library conference room. For more information about the book club, call 972-516-6250.
July 25 – “In the Neighborhood” by Peter Lovenheim

11 a.m. every Friday – Babies & Books for ages 0 to 1.
9 and 9:45 a.m. every Wednesday – Toddler Time for ages 1 and 2
10:30 and 11:15 a.m. every Wednesday – Big Kid Storytime for ages 3 to 5
6 p.m. every Tuesday – Family Storytime for all ages.
Although storytimes are free, tickets are required. They are available at the children’s reference desk the day of the program.
Library hours are noon to 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The Smith Library is located at 300 Country Club Rd. (FM 1378) in Building 300.
Plano Library
At the Gladys Harrington Library, 1501 18th St. in Plano, programs for kids in grades one through five will be at 2 p.m. every
Tuesday.

Teens
The remaining summer program for teens in grades six through 12 will be at 3 p.m. July 20.
Those attending will make a Thai string doll.
The program will last about an hour.
Interactive exhibit
The library is also hosting the Contact Science Exhibit – Micro World Adventures this summer.
“What does your skin look like up close? How about your cotton shirt or your hair? Mouth parts of a housefly? This exhibit has
both a ‘scope on a rope’ microscope and a high magnifi cation microscope. Come and learn to use them to view prepared specimens as well as other objects of your own,” information from the library states.
Adults
The final summer adult program will be from 7 to 8:45 p.m. Thursday, July 7. The topis is “Applying for a Job Online.”
According to information from the library, those attending the class “will learn how to eff ectively apply for jobs online.
Topics to be covered include “an overview of the job application processes for the 21 century, how to prepare an electronic
resume, email skills and etiquette for contacting employers, and a guide to job-search resources online.”
The Friends of the Plano Library will host a book sale with all items $2 or less July 21 though 23 at the Plano Centre, 2000 E. Spring Creek Pkwy. Times are 6 to 10 p.m. July 21, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 22 and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 23.
There is no admission charge.
Items included in the sale are hardback and paperback books, DVDs, CDs, videocassettes, records and audiocassettes
