Students strut stuff at livestock show

McKinney’s Myers Park was bustling with animals and competitors during the 13th annual Princeton Friends and Family Livestock Show Dec. 17 and 18.
A few hundred people showed to watch local FFA and 4H clubs strut their stuff and take home new titles. For many this is also the last area show before the The Collin County Junior Livestock Association’s show that starts Jan. 4 and run through Jan. 7.
Princeton Ag teacher Randy Shaw said the show had a pretty good turnout, although they always want more people to come.
Plano ISD FFA teacher Karen Kier said her school mostly showed pigs and one steer in Saturday’s show and plans on more to compete in January.
“We have students showing pigs this weekend at the Princeton show.  At Collin County we will have kids showing pigs, lambs, goats, cattle, shop and floral projects,” Kier said.
She said the Plano ISD FFA kids just finished up with their Leadership Development Events.  “We had two teams advance to the area level, and one team make it all the way to state placing sixth at the state level.”
New to the livestock show were 4H clubbers from McKinney Christian.
“This is only our second-ever show, as we just started the club,” said Scott Fillebrown, 4H father.
He said they enjoyed the competition and felt adding 4H was a great way to add an extracurricular to the Christian school’s program. Their first show was in Denton two weeks prior.
Julia Lemin, 18, of Plano East won reserve breed champion with her steer Padre. This was her first time competition in Princeton’s show.
“I’ve been doing this since my freshman year, so about four years now,” Lemin said. “I’ve had Padre since August. I love FFA. You learn a lot and it teaches you responsibility.”
Lemin said she plans on competing in Collin County’s show in January too. Last year she showed swine and brought home second-place honors in that competition.
