Mayor Bret Baldwin: I feel like our greatest accomplishment this past year has been our handling of the budget and finances of the city. We were able to hold the tax rate steady (except for the increase attributed to the bond package that was passed last year) in the face of a very difficult financial environment.
Revenues from building permits and development activity dropped sharply, and our sales tax revenues did not increase as we had hoped. Staff and council worked hard to identify potential areas of savings and increase efficiency.
We were conservative in our forecasts and expenditures, and by the end of the year, it appears that will have been able to add several hundred thousand dollars to the city’s savings account.
This past year we made great strides in the area of planning. We have plans to develop many of our parks and medians.
This coming year will be exciting because we will start to see those plans become reality. We will see a second water tower constructed in the Gables-Ranch area. We will also see trails developed and many new amenities in our neighborhood parks. The Central Business District will continue to develop with high quality and attractive developments.
I feel like our boards and commissions, city staff, and council have really come together and are all working together to make good things happen in all areas of the city. I think this ability to get things done will become readily apparent this coming year. It is a tribute to all of those in the community who have given unselfishly of their time and talents to make this a great city.
