Cold weather can’t stop annual livestock competition

Students hurriedly rush to  and fro in the building, waiting for the next class to be called. They prepare by sprucing up their animals and calming the livestock and themselves down before entering the judging ring. They remove their jackets and the blankets from their animals.

And then the shivering begins.

Despite below-freezing temperatures during the Collin County Youth Livestock Show Jan. 6 through 9, students from the surrounding area competed fervently.

Though propane heaters were brought in to help provide heat to the animals, students and spectators in the building in Myers Park were still cold. As one judge said to the crowd while judging market goats, “The kids are shivering, the goats are shivering and I’m shivering.”

Despite less-than-ideal conditions, students learned animals must still be cared for and the show must go on.

Several Plano East and Wylie FFA students were among this year’s show winners.

Camry Farhat from Plano East  has the grand champion lamb, and her fellow FFA member Haley Richards showed the champion exotic heifer.
