Education specialist to explain state board’s role
The next meeting of the Texas Democratic Women of Collin County will be held at 6:45 p.m. July 28 at Collin College Preston Ridge Campus 9700 Wade Blvd., Frisco - Founders Hall, Shawnee Room F148.
Speakers will be Dot Pitts and Judy Gasser. They will explain the role of the Texas Board of Education and how decisions by the board affect what is taught in Texas public schools.
Pitts is an independent instructional specialist, and Gasser is a veteran teacher and school administrator.
Congressman to address Republican women
The Golden Corridor Republican Women will hear from U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson at 6:45 p.m. Aug. 7 at Parkway Hills Baptist Church, 2700 Dallas Pkwy. in Plano.

Coping with anger topic of bereavement lunch
Larry Barber, a licensed professional counselor and director of CounselingWorks and GriefWorks, will speak on “Coping with Anger in Loss” at the July 28 bereavement luncheon hosted by the Visiting Nurse Association of Collin County.
The lunch is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Grand Texas Seniors Community at 2491 Country View Ln. in McKinney. The lunch is free, but reservations are requested and can be made by calling VNA of Collin County at 214-733-5500.

Children On Stage presents ‘Seussical the Musical’
Garland Civic Theatre’s Children On Stage will present a production of “Seussical the Musical” July 24 to Aug. 3.

Family violence prevention program coming in October
A half-day Family Violence Prevention Summit will be held Oct. 1 at the Garland ISD Special Events Center at 4999 Naaman Forest Blvd.
Cost is $10 per person.
Attendees will learn to recognize signs of domestic violence and how to implement a family violence prevention program in the workplace.

Texas Reelers – a square dance group – will host a free barbecue dinner and introduction to modern square dance Aug. 4.

The Smith Public Library’s Adults Fourth Monday Book & Summer Movie Club will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. July 28 at the library.
The group will be discussing “Haunting of Hill House” by Shirley Jackson.
