Wrestling is a popular sport in Plano.
Coaches like Alan Koebke would like it to be even more so.
To that end, he and others are promoting a new wrestling club that is open to area youth.
An organizational meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13 at the Plano Sports Authority, which will oversee the organization.
“What we’re looking for is getting a club going again,” Koebke said. “Eight, nine years ago Plano had the No. 1 wrestling club in the state of Texas. There were parent changes and coaching changes. Their kids grew up and those people moved on and the club sort of died out, so we’re trying to get back up and going again.”
The club, Koebke said, will be open to people throughout the Metroplex. The plan is to have it up and running around Nov. 1 and then continue through about February, Koebke said.
“We’re looking for as young as we can (and) up to high school age,” the coach said. “And what we’re looking for is anyone who has wrestled in college, who is interested in helping coach. We’re always looking for more volunteers. We’ve got to get kids in there. We’re probably looking at two nights a week practice.”
Koebke added, “They will have tournaments that they can go to that are set up through USA Wrestling, and there are meets all over Texas … What we’re trying to do is get it so that we’re introducing the sport of wrestling to kids, so hopefully they’ll continue to wrestle when they get into the high school and senior high level.”
